Napier:

After an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale flattened the town and literally lifted thousands of hectares of tidal flats out of the sea, Napier needed to completely rebuild - which it did in style.

• Sample local cuisine at the many fine cafés and restaurants.
• Visit the marine park and entertainment centres along Marine Parade.
  

Hastings

Hastings is 15km from Napier and widely regarded as its twin city. Just as Napier adopted Art Deco after the 1931 earthquake, Hastings chose Spanish Mission as its signature style.

• There are more than 40 wineries to explore in the region.
• Check out Splash Planet, a huge water-based amusement park.
  

Activities

There is so much to do in both Napier and Hastings districts, including a visit to the Gannets, the beaches, Te Mata Peak (you may be able to watch the parapenting or walk through the redwoods) a favourite with most visitors. Great vineries and cafes or take a picnic to Cornwall Park or Frimley Park.
